Obituary for John Furgal

Springfield- John M. Furgal, 74, of Springfield passed away peacefully at home October 4, 2018. John, son of the late Joseph and Kathryn (Pekala) Furgal, was born in Northampton, MA, March 17, 1944. Growing up in Monson, John attended and graduated from Monson High school. He proudly served his country in the United States Army receiving the Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Service Medal. John later went on to work installing equipment for Verizon before retiring after 34 years. He was a hard worker and enjoyed being outside. John took meticulous pride and care working on his house and his treasured 1976 Chevy truck. He was a quiet and gentle spirit, but to those who knew him best, John was always ready with quick joke that could light up a room. John will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 46 years, Shirley (Polchlopek) Furgal. In addition to his wife, John is survived by his two daughters Amy Dumais and her husband Dave of Longmeadow, MA, Melanie Henry and her husband Matt of Springfield, MA and their son, Lucas who in a brief time became the light of John’s life; his brother Joseph Furgal of Lee, MA and his sister Mary Bogacz and husband Chet of Newington, CT; his nieces and nephews Stephanie Bruno, Steven Bogacz, Tobey Simone, and his 9 great nieces and nephews; John was also a friend of Bill. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt “thank you” to the Porchlight VNA in Chicopee for their compassionate care given to John and his family. Visiting hours for John will be held TUESDAY, October 9, 2018 from 4pm-7pm at SAMPSON’S CHAPEL OF THE ACRES, 21 Tinkham Rd. Springfield. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held WEDNESDAY, October 10, 2018 in St. Patrick’s Church, 1900 Allen St. Springfield, MA followed by Rites of Committal and Interment in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, 800 Montgomery St. Chicopee, MA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 300 5th Avenue, Suite 6, Waltham, MA 02451 or a charity of one’s choice.
