Frank Walter Tencza, age 75, died of cancer at his home in Wilbraham on October 27, 2018. Born on October 23, 1943, he grew up in South Hadley, graduating in the South Hadley High School class of 1961. After attending St. Louis University and the Hartford Art Institute, he served in the Army as part of a forward-deployed artillery unit in Vietnam from 1966 – 1967. It was during artillery training at Fort Sill that he met and married his bride of 52 years, Janie Owen. They later settled in Holyoke, Springfield, and, finally, Wilbraham, where he served as the President of the Friends of the Seniors, Fire Commissioner, founding President of the Wilbraham Art League, and President of the Chicopee Sportsmen’s Club. Frank and John Sevey planned the Wilbraham Peach Festival, holding the first event at the Wilbraham-Monson Academy in August 1985. Frank was involved in every aspect from parking direction to creation of the Peach Festival emblem. In 1989 he organized the establishment of a memorial to a B-24J bomber crew that perished on Skinner Mountain in a training accident during World War II. He continued to volunteer at Westover Reserve Air Base for many years, particularly with respect to its annual air show.
Frank’s career at Mass Mutual spanned 30 years and he retired as Director of Marketing. In his retirement, he served as the founding President of the Veterans Art League, a council member of the Academic Artist’s Association, an interpreter first on the schooner L.A. Dunton and then at the Boathouse at Mystic Seaport, and gave art classes all over western Massachusetts. A lifelong Red Sox fan, he was delighted to witness their sudden spate of World Series victories after decades of disappointment. He is survived by his bride Janie, his daughters Elizabeth Tencza (Bill), of Youngstown, OH and Deborah Breidenbach (Tim) of Bourne, MA, and his grandchildren, Jasmin and Jordan Breidenbach and William Ramage, Stella Tencza, and Lily Ramage. He also leaves a sister, Deborah Chaffin, of Lynchburg, VA. Calling hours will be held at St. Cecilia’s Church in Wilbraham on November 1 at 9:45 AM, followed by services at 10:30 and a private burial. Memorial donations may be made to Forever Home Rescue New England at 106 Adams St, Medfield, MA 02052, or at www.foreverhomerescue.org.
