SPRINGFIELD- Kevin David O’Brien passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on November 23, 2018. Born on January 14th, 1960, to the late Joseph M. O’Brien Jr and Emma Louise (Sherman) O’Brien, he was a lifelong resident of Springfield. Kevin graduated Cathedral High school in 1977 and later went on to obtain his Bachelor’s from UMass Amherst. Kevin was the owner and president of O’Brien Construction. Even when not working, Kevin was a talented craftsman and enjoyed working with his hands. Kevin attained the rank of Eagle Scout with Indian Orchard Troop 40 and was a scout master for several years. Kevin was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hike, backpack, canoe and camp. He also enjoyed spending summers at his home on Cape Cod. He was also a diehard Patriots and Yankees fan. Kevin served as a coach for CYO basketball at St. Matthew’s in Indian Orchard. In addition to his parents, Kevin was predeceased by his brother in law Gary James, formerly of Enfield. Kevin will be sadly missed by all who knew him including his loving wife, Melissa; his brothers Joseph and wife Kathleen of Longmeadow, James of Indian Orchard, Gerard and his wife Eva of Indian Orchard; his sisters Mary O’Brien of Indian Orchard, Patricia James of Enfield, CT, and Bridget D’Agostino and her husband Francis of Indian Orchard. He also leaves his eight nieces and nephews; Jed (Maria) O’Brien, Rory (Kelsey) O’Brien , Ben (Sarah) O’Brien, Erin O’Brien, Moira (Angel) Lozada, Megan (Todd) Witwer, Joe O’Brien IV, and Sarah (Dan) Bishop. Kevin had a special relationship with Melissa’s children Michael C. Bergeron of Burlington, VT, Meaghan Bergeron-Mahan and her husband Brad of Granby, MA and will be greatly missed by them. Kevin will also be remembered by his 12 great nieces and nephews as well as his large extended family and many cherished friends. Family and friends are invited to a period of visitation from 4pm-7pm on Wednesday, November 28th, 2018 at Sampson’s Chapel of the Acres, 21 Tinkham Rd. Springfield. A liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, November 29th, 10am in St. Patrick’s Church, 1900 Allen St. Springfield. Burial will follow on Friday November 30th, 2018 2pm in St. Aloysius Cemetery, 1273 Berkshire Ave, Indian Orchard. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
