SPRINGFIELD- Alexis R. Martinez, age 29, passed away January 5, 2019, in Springfield, MA. He was born in Springfield on August 27, 1989, and was raised by his father and mother, Tomas and Margarita (Rivera) Martinez. Growing up in Springfield, Alexis graduated from Central High school and later went on to obtain his certificate as a self-employed contractor. He enjoyed being a member of the South End Adult Basketball League and the Hubbard Basketball League of Indian Orchard. Alexis was outgoing with a sense of humor that could light up a room. He was an avid sports fan, and especially enjoyed the Philadelphia Eagles and his favorite basketball athlete, Carmelo Anthony. Alexis was an incredible uncle and will forever be remembered by his love and devotion to all of his family. Above all, Alexis was an amazing father who was always there for his son, Carter Anthony Martinez. Alexis was predeceased by his biological mother, Soledad Diaz and his brother, Christian Diaz. In addition to his parents and son, Alexis is survived by his grandmother Eligia Cedeño of the Dominican Republic; his brothers, Wilson Geraldo of Philadelphia, PA, Antoine Diaz of Chicopee, MA, Pedro Carrasquillo and Omi Carrasquillo both of Philadelphia, PA, Alex Martinez of Ludlow, MA, Aaron Martinez of Indiana, and Agustin Cardona of Palmer, MA; his sisters Melissa Diaz of Hartford, CT, Yvonne Diaz and Jessica Jenkins both of East Longmeadow, MA, Evangelina Rodriguez, Nilda Martinez, Awilda Cardona, and Jennifer Martinez, all of Springfield, MA. Alexis will also be dearly missed by his son’s mother, Jalida Gutierrez of Springfield, MA and his high school coach, Dave Williams, who played a very large role in his life and was a father figure to Alexis; and many extended family members and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alexis R. Martinez memorial fund c/o Freedom Credit Union. Visiting Hours for Alexis will be held Thursday, January 10, 2019, from 4pm-7pm at Sampson’s Chapel of the Acres, 21 Tinkham Rd. Springfield, MA, 01129. Funeral services and burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
