SPRINGFIELD- Richard Donald Higgins, 84, of Springfield passed away January 11, 2019 at Mont Marie Healthcare Center. Richard, son of the late Charles J. and Mary (Suprenant) Higgins Sr., was born in Springfield on August 8, 1934. He proudly served his country in the US Marines and went on to become a machinist at Mead Westvaco where he retired after 35 years of faithful service. Richard was the president of the United Paperworkers Union Local 579 which was a direct affiliate of the United Paperworkers of AFL-CIO. He was also the secondary treasurer of the Pioneer Valley Labor Council. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Lorraine E. (Hanington) Higgins; his brothers, William, Charles, Walter, John, Robert, and Bernard; and his sisters, Gertrude, Ethel, Dorothy, Bernice, Loretta, and Theresa. Richard will be missed by all who knew him, including his sister, Lorraine Rimondi of Springfield; his sister in law, Rose Tuck; his several nieces and nephews; and many extended family members and friends. Richard’s family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to the staff of Mont Marie Healthcare Center for their compassionate care. Visiting Hours for Richard will be held Tuesday, January 15, 2019 from 9AM to 10:45AM at Sampson’s Chapel of the Acres, 21 Tinkham Road, Springfield. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30AM at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church, 417 Boston Road, Springfield. Rites of Committal and Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 421 Tinkham Road, Springfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Richard’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
