Print
Ethel P. (Malandrinos) Donahue, age 98, passed away while attended by loving family on Feb. 8, 2019. She was born in Springfield, MA on Jan. 28, 1921 to the late Paul and Anna (Papadopoulos) Malandrinos. Ethel was a member of the St. George Cathedral Church in Springfield and their Over 60 club. She was a trailblazer as a woman and mother with a gift for math and science who worked hard and fought for equal pay for equal work. As a junior at Classical High School she received the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute award for achievement in math and science, previously given only to male students. She earned her BA at Fitchburg State Teachers College (now Fitchburg University) and taught for a year at a one room schoolhouse in Vermont. She then worked as a weapons inspector at the Springfield Armory, among other positions. In 1943 she married her husband Francis W. Donahue (Frank) and together they had seven children. They taught their children many things, but especially to honor all people.

In 1957 she began working in the actuarial department at Monarch Life Insurance Co. where she stayed until retirement in 1986. She was an amazingly strong, kind, and thoughtful person as well as a wonderful mother with a common sense approach to life and a twinkle in her eye; she is dearly loved by every one of her children and their friends, who were always welcome in the Donahue home. Ethel was predeceased by her husband, Francis W. Donahue and his aunt Margaret O’Brien, by her beloved daughter Frances, her grandson John Michael Donahue, her brother James Mandrus and her sister Alice Eustathion. She leaves six children: Dennis Donahue and his wife Cheryl of St. Augustine, FL, Paul Donahue of Brooklyn, NY, John Donahue and his wife Janet of Suffield, CT, MaryAnn Munger of Granby, MA, Margaret Donahue Lynch and her husband Jef of Townsend, MA and Michael Donahue and his partner Donna Landauer of Springfield, MA. Ethel also leaves her siblings Olga Boucher, Mary Rose and George Mandrus; 10 grandchildren (Jennifer, Lucas, Carolyn, Maura, Jacqueline, Chelsea, Scott, Francis, Christopher and Anthony) and six great-grandchildren (David, Finny, Alex, Asher, Maddie and Audrey).

There will be a visiting hour at the St. George Cathedral Church, (22 St. George Rd., Springfield, MA 01104) chapel on Friday, Feb. 15, 2019 at 10 A.M. followed at 11 A.M. by a funeral service. Burial will be at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery (421 Tinkham Rd., Springfield, MA 01129) after the service. A luncheon will be held at the Ludlow Country Club (1 Tony Lema Dr., Ludlow, MA 01056) following burial.
