John “Jake” Meara of Springfield passed away at his home in Springfield on Thursday May 9th, after a courageous battle with Lewy Body Dementia. He was born in New York City to the late Harold and Louise (Williams) Meara on January 6th, 1933. He was a graduate of Enfield High School. John was a veteran of the Korean War, serving on the USS Rich (DD-820) in the United States Navy. He proudly served the City of Springfield for twenty seven years as a police officer, retiring as a detective. In addition to his parents, Jake was preceded in death by his son Patrick, and his sisters Mary Ann Giordano, and Louise (Bonnie) Nigro. Jake will forever be in the hearts of his loving family including his wife of sixty years, Margaret (O’Sullivan) Meara; Sons Michael Meara of Springfield, John Meara and his wife Heidi of Arvada CO, Daniel Meara and wife Michelle of Holland; his daughters Catherine Trombley and husband Al of Springfield, Joanne Meara and her husband Michael Ferullo of Springfield. Jake also leaves his siblings including his brothers James Meara of Enfield, and Thomas Meara and wife Paula of Springfield; his sister Nancy Kendzierski of Wilbraham; as well as five cherished grandchildren: Jessica and her husband Brendan, Carrie, Jake and his wife Brittany, Cadie and Coty; as well as four great grand children Jake, Paitynn, Liam, and Owen. Family and friends are invited to the Sampson Funeral Home at 710 Liberty St Springfield on Wednesday, May 15th from 4 to 7pm for a period of visitation. The Funeral Mass will be held on Thurs, May 16th, 2019 at 11:30 am directly at Sacred Heart Church in Springfield. Burial will follow at the MA Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam. In lieu of flowers, Jake’s family has requested that a memorial donation be made in his memory to the Shriners Hospital for Children 516 Carew St Springfield, MA 01104.
