James F. Santamaria, 84, of Springfield died Sunday afternoon on September 8, 2019 surrounded by his loving family at the Soldiers Home in Holyoke. James, the son of the late James W. Santamaria and Lillian M. (Tracy) Santamaria of Springfield MA was born on August 21, 1935 in Springfield, MA. James was born and raised in Springfield and graduated from Tech High School. A lifelong resident of Springfield he was a communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Church. He was a proud veteran serving in the U.S. Army as a combat engineer in the Korean conflict. Jim met the love of his life Helen Bates at the Tech High School reunion in 1962 and married in 1964. He was a devoted husband and father to his six children. Jim was employed by the city of Springfield as a firefighter for over 30 years and proudly retired in 1994 with Badge #1. In addition, he worked at Western New England College as a maintenance man. He was a jack of all trades and had a natural talent as a skilled carpenter and gardener and passed those talents on to his children. He loved to tend to his tomato garden and enjoyed the company of his best friends Dennis, Donnie, and Nizi on Sunday mornings. In his younger years Jim loved to dance to all kinds of music, supported his children in sports and loved going to Misquamicut Beach for vacation. Jim will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him, especially by his children, grandchildren and sisters that he loved and cherished. He will be laid to rest beside his wife Helen at the Veterans Cemetery in Agawam, MA. In addition to his parents Jim was predeceased by his brother Jackie. He is survived by his three sons, Joe J. Santamaria of Springfield, Jimmy M. Santamaria and his wife Sue of Springfield, Jon P. Santamaria and his wife Kelley of Kittery Point, ME; three daughters, Lauren Comeau and her husband Stan of Springfield, Jennifer Santamaria of Springfield, Gina Atchison and her husband Ken of Holyoke. He also leaves his sister’s Judy Scibelli and Janie Grimaldi and husband Nick of Agawam who will deeply miss him. Papa will be missed by all of his grandchildren, Lindsay, Allyson, Carly, Michael, Joe, Jimmy Jr., Meghan, Sophia, Dylan and Connor along with many, many nephews and nieces who adored him. Jimmy will also be sadly missed by all of his friends at Sophia’s Pizza and Restaurant. The family extends a special thank you to all of the caring nurses and staff at the Day Brooke Village Nursing Home, Beacon Hospice and the Soldiers Home. Visiting hours for Jim will be held on Sunday, September 15, 2019 from 1pm-4pm at Sampson’s Chapel of the Acres, 21 Tinkham Rd, Springfield, MA 01129. A funeral home service will be held on Monday, September 16, 2019 beginning at 12 pm at Sampson’s Chapel of the Acres, followed by Rites of Committal and Internment at Massachusetts Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main St, Agawam, MA 01001.
