Obituary

Robert P. McMahon, 87 passed away peacefully on September 23, 2019 surrounded by family.
Born in Springfield to Joseph and Jessie (Wilcoxson) McMahon, Bob grew up in Agawam, raised his family in East Longmeadow, resided at East Village Place, and Loomis Lakeside at Reeds Landing. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Patricia (Gay) originally from Walpole MA, daughters Barbara (Bonnie) Cohen and her husband Alan of Galloway NJ, Gay McDyer and her husband Joseph of Feeding Hills MA, and son Robert (Rob) and his wife Kelley (Carroll) of Hopedale MA. Loving grandfather to Nathan Cohen and Jane Whitty of Brooklyn NY, Shannon (McDyer) and Jason Daily of Worthington OH, Neil Cohen and Jamie Felix of San Diego CA, Joseph McDyer and Stefanie Littlefield of Feeding Hills MA. Thrilled great-grandfather of Josephine Daily, Nolan McDyer and Olivia Littlefield, he had been looking forward to the upcoming arrival of Josie’s baby brother. Bob held Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Business Administration from the University of Massachusetts. He was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, which led to lifelong friendships that were very important to him. After working as a production planner for 2 years at AG Spalding in Chicopee, he embarked on a 30-year career at the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company, achieving the position of Vice President of Information Services. A “systems guy”, Bob directed systems analysis, design and programming activities. He enjoyed the challenge of applying technology to business and developing people. During his career, he earned the Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) designation, passed numerous LOMA® exams, served on the UMass Isenberg School of Management Advisory Council, was active in United Way campaigns and served as an advisor to Junior Achievement. For many years, he enjoyed teaching in the evening division of Western New England College. Bob was a true leader in his career and in the community. He served as Treasurer and Chair of the Board of Deacons at First Congregational Church of East Longmeadow. At Reed’s Landing, he was President of the Resident’s Association and a founding member and writer for the Reeds Landing Players. Until recently he served on the Board of Directors for Brownstone Gardens in East Longmeadow. Bob loved Cape Cod, sailing, tennis, cross country skiing and travel. He had a lifetime love of learning and avidly followed world news. Always supportive of his grandchildren, “Beeper” cared deeply about their lives and interests and enjoyed sharing his knowledge and interests with them. Often spotted with his camera around his neck, he loved to laugh and never lost his sense of humor. Husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, he leaves many cherished memories. Services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church of East Longmeadow, 7 Somers Rd, East Longmeadow, MA 01028; or to the Reeds Landing Philanthropic Fund, 807 Wilbraham Road, Springfield, MA
