Obituary for Leonard P. Rooke, Sr.

Wilbraham - Leonard “Popsie” P. Rooke Sr., 94, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on September 30, 2019 at the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke. Son of the late Walter and Bernadette (Manning) Rooke, born in Springfield on May 15, 1925, attended Technical High School and went on to proudly serve in the United States Navy where he was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and the American Theatre Medal. He then started his own professional portrait photography business and Breckwood Imports and Exports. He earned a degree in the inaugural class of Police Science at STCC. He then served the City of Springfield as a photography and fingerprint specialist for the Police Detective Bureau. He retired as a Lieutenant after 21 years. He later founded Leonard & Leonard Realtors of Wilbraham. Leonard loved reading, classical music, and technology. He was also known for his love of gourmet cooking, specifically for his apple squares, “Can’t Tell Ya” Chili, and his award winning “No Fail” pie crust. Leonard will be missed by all who knew him including his son, Leonard Rooke Jr. (Mary) of Wilbraham, his daughter Pamela (Rooke ) Bray (Randy) of Storrs, CT, his brother Michael Rooke (Pat) of East Longmeadow, his sister Mary Lundrigan of West Springfield, sister-in-law Marion of Springfield and his beloved granddaughter Tara Rooke of NYC, as well as many extended family members and friends. In addition to his parents, Leonard is predeceased by his loving wife, Henrietta (Romansky) Rooke, as well as five brothers: Kenneth, Ralph, George, Walter, and Donald Rooke. A period of visitation will be held from 9 am-10 am in St. Cecilia’s Church, 42 Main St, Wilbraham, MA followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial beginning at 10 am. Rites of Committal and Interment to follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 421 Tinkham Rd, Springfield, MA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Soldiers’ Home Activity Fund in Holyoke, 110 Cherry St. Holyoke, MA 01040.
