Mary Theresa (McKenna) Czupryna, age 84, formerly of Wilbraham and lately of The Reserve of East Longmeadow, passed away peacefully on November 2 following a brief illness with her family always close by. Mary was born in Springfield, MA on December 8, 1934, the first of 2 daughters of John and Bridget McKenna. She was predeceased by her husband Walter of 58 years in 2016. For her family growing up in East Longmeadow, Mary was a true homesteading woman- cooking, baking, gardening, canning, making preserves, decorating cakes, doing needlepoint and cross stitch, sewing, theorem painting and couponing to supplement the family budget. As such, she passed creativity and a sense of the power of frugality to her children. She was a founding member of Saint Patrick’s church, a place where she found peace and fulfillment over the years. Mary also greatly enjoyed time spent at the summer home at the Rhode Island shore with her family, especially her grandchildren- looking for ‘beach treasures’, playing Boggle and other games, and sharing meals, especially late night nachos or pizza. Mary and her husband Walter enjoyed playing nickel slots at Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun when going back and forth to Rhode Island. She was a long-time member of Saint Patrick’s church and a member of their women’s club where she baked and donated staples for those in need at Open Pantry and the Loaves and Fishes program. One of her passions was baking Christmas cookies to share with family and friends. Mary’s ‘Irish Roots’ were very important to her and she had the pleasure of visiting the birthplaces of both her parents and meeting her far-flung cousins on the Dingle Peninsula in 1988. Mary is survived by her four children, Michael (Michele) of Newark, DE, Eileen Murphy (Greg) of Windsor, CT, Thomas (Diane) of West Springfield, MA, and Kathleen Czupryna, of East Longmeadow, MA. Mary was especially indebted to her daughter Kathleen who was her care-giver and companion in the later years of her life; they enjoyed celebrating their great faith in God by reciting the rosary together each day. Mary is also survived by her sister Margaret Corridan, 9 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren as well as numerous cousins and brother- and sister-in-laws. She was also blessed by having the opportunity to meet her latest great-grandchild just days before her death. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 7, 2019 at 10 am at St Patrick’s Church 1900 Allen St. Springfield, MA 01118. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Visiting Hours will be held on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 from 4 to 7 pm at Sampson Chapel of the Acres 21 Tinkham Rd. Springfield. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Saint Patrick’s Church.
