James Richard Moriarty, 84, passed away peacefully at his home on November 3, 2019. He was born on June 30, 1935 in Westfield MA to the late Hazel (Broga) Moriarty and Jeremiah A. Moriarty. Jim graduated from St. Mary's High School and served 2 years in the U.S. Army. He received his teaching degree from Westfield State Teachers College in 1960 and his Master's degree in 1963. Jim taught at Howard and Acushnet Ave Schools in Springfield for several years and then became Assistant Principal of Acushnet Ave, Carew and Washington Schools. In 1974 he became Principal of the former Armory St School where he served for 22 years. In 2006, city and school officials honored Jim for his outstanding and dedicated service by naming the gym at the Edward Boland School the Mitchell-Moriarty Gym. Jim loved his trips to Mohegan Sun Casino and watching his favorite sports teams: the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins and Celtics. He enjoyed playing card games with family and friends (but only if he won). Jim was a generous, caring person with a remarkable memory. When visiting with friends and family, he especially enjoyed telling interesting stories from his past and sharing about his grandchildren’s activities and achievements. Jim was predeceased in 2014 by his beloved wife of 53 years, Margaret (Clune) Moriarty. He is survived by his loving son, Thomas J. Moriarty and wife Nancy of Springfield MA; and his two devoted daughters, Kathryn Sicbaldi and husband John of Trumbull CT, and Mary Penta and husband John of Watertown MA. He will be dearly missed by his five cherished grandchildren, Bill and Allison Sicbaldi and Ryan, Jessie and Margaret Moriarty. He also leaves a loving sister-in-law, Ellen Moriarty, of Harwich, MA. Jim was also predeceased by his three brothers, Edward, Jeremiah and Thomas. Calling hours will be held on Friday November 8 from 4-6:30 p.m. at Sampson’s Chapel of the Acres Funeral Home, 21 Tinkham Rd, Springfield. Friends are asked to meet on Saturday November 9 at Holy Cross Church, 219 Plumtree Road, Springfield to celebrate the Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Rites of Committal and Interment will follow at St. Michael’s Cemetery, 1601 State St, Springfield. For those wishing, donations may be made in his memory to St. Michael’s Academy Building Fund, 153 Eddywood St, Springfield MA 01118 or to St. Mary’s Parish School, 86 Mechanic St, Westfield MA 01085.

I met "Mr." Modularity when I started reaching in Springfield in 1982. My best principal ever. He was firm, straight shooter when you needed his help, and most of all v very organized.. You knew where you stood. When we went to The Boyle for drinks he was still Mr. Moriarty because I had that much respect for him.(Peg always laughed when she heard me say that. A few years later I needed him to help me land a new position. He went out of his way to help me.
Thank you Mr . Modularity for everything.
