Owen Richard O’Neil, 87, of Springfield passed away November 23, 2019 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Owen, son of the late Owen F. and Alice (Kane) O’Neil was born in Holyoke on October 22, 1932. Raised in Holyoke, he was a graduate of Holyoke High School and went on to attain his Bachelor’s degree at UMASS and his Master’s degree at American International College. Owen proudly served his country in the US Army, stationed in Hawaii during the Korean War. Owen then went on to work as an administrator and a teacher for the Springfield Public School System where he retired after over 40 years of faithful service. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed reading, and also loved traveling to Alaska and Ireland. He was a long-time coach in Springfield for many sports teams. Above all, Owen loved spending time with his family. He was a member of the Springfield Elks Lodge #61, the John Boyle O’Reilly Club, as well as Hampden Country Club and Elmcrest Country Club for many years. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Mary (Burns) O’Neil in 1983. He is also predeceased by his brothers in law, Nicholas, Michael and John Burns, and Donald Welch. Owen will be missed by all who knew him, including his daughters, Eileen Miller and her husband David of Attleboro, MA, Kathleen Cicero and her husband Roberto of Springfield, Theresa O’Neil and her wife Pamela of Northampton, Maura O’Neil of Wilbraham, and Siobhan O’Neil-Smith and her husband Jack of Springfield; his son, Owen P. O’Neil and his wife Renee of Macungie, PA; his sister, Phyllis Welch of Easthampton; his grandchildren, Anthony Cicero and his wife Victoria, Christian Cicero and his wife Brianna, Robert Cicero and Samantha, Brendin Miller, Patrick Miller, Aidan Smith, Emma Clare Smith, Erin Mary O’Neil, and Devin Clare O’Neil; and his great grandchildren, Conor Cicero and Leona Mary Cicero who was born the morning of his passing. He also leaves his brother in law, Patrick Burns and his wife, Joan; their children, Mary Ellen Gagnon, Patricia Burns, Joan Marsh, and Patrick Burns. Owen also leaves behind his long time friend, Judy Allen of Longmeadow; and many extended family members and friends. Visiting Hours for Owen will be held Tuesday, November 26, 2019 from 4PM to 7PM at Sampson’s Chapel of the Acres, 21 Tinkham Road, Springfield. A Funeral Home Service will be held Wednesday, November 27, 2019 beginning at 10AM. Burial will follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery, 1601 State Street, Springfield.
