Leo J. Monaghan, 95, of Springfield, passed away while surrounded by his family in prayer, on Wednesday, November 27th. He was born August 14th, 1924 in South Amboy, NJ to Leo A. and Catherine (Noble) Monaghan. Leo honorably served in the United States Navy during WW2, receiving an honorable discharge in 1945. He studied at various institutions throughout his career, including Harvard where he received his Bachelor’s degree, and Boston College where he received his Master’s degree. He was employed by Shawinigan Chemical, and later Monsanto, as a research chemist, and was a member of the American Chemical Society. It was through this work that he became the holder of several process patents. He was a devout Catholic and ardent Pro-Life supporter, who served for many years as a CCD teacher at Our Lady of Sacred Heart and St. Catherine of Siena Parish, where he was also a daily communicant. Leo enjoyed golfing and was known for his storytelling and engaging sense of humor. Leo will be missed by his large and loving family, including; his beloved wife of over 71 years, Marilyn (Freeley) Monaghan; and his children: Richard Monaghan and his wife Joan (predeceased) of Morristown, NJ; Karen Mihalchick (predeceased) and her husband John of Springfield, MA; Jeanne Smith and her husband Michael of Southwick, MA; Kathleen Monaghan of Wilbraham, MA, John Ellis-Monaghan and his wife Joanna of Grand Isle, VT; James Monaghan and his wife Peggy of Crofton, MD; Marilyn Billings and her husband Jonathan of St. Albans, VT; and Carol Paul and her husband Rick of St. Albans, VT. He will also be missed by his twenty five grandchildren: Anthony Monaghan and his wife Dana; Sean Monaghan and his wife Natalie; Erin Koffer and her husband Ken; Christopher Mihalchick (predeceased); Timothy Smith and his wife Jessica; Eleanor Smith; Theresa Chirles and her husband Kevin; Patrick Smith and his wife Cady; Roseann Cabeen and her husband Matthew; Eva (Ellis-Monaghan) Myers and her husband Charles; Isaiah and Francis Ellis-Monaghan; Michael, Joseph, John, Mary, Elizabeth, Anna, Peter, Paul, and Matthew Monaghan; Katelyn Billings and her husband Ben; Emily Billings; and Hannah and Michael Paul; as well as his twenty great grandchildren: Aiden Monaghan; Owen, Kate, Maeve, and Blake Monaghan; Julia, Norah, Timothy (predeceased) and Evelyn Lee Smith; Dominic and Marcus Chirles; Jameer, Magdala, Joseph, and Maeve Smith; Thomas, Benjamin, Henry and Ian Cabeen; and Charles William Myers. He was predeceased by his sister Kathleen Shea. Family and friends are invited to Sampson’s Chapel of the Acres funeral home on Thursday, December 5th from 5pm-8pm for a period of visitation. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, December 6th beginning at 11am at St. Catherine of Siena Parish. Burial with military honors will follow at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam at 1pm.
